It is said that good things come in small packages. You will find this to be true if you venture to Amagi Sushi in the Orangecrest community of Riverside.
Once inside, you will find a warm reception and more importantly, an amazing selection of traditional Japanese faire. With only nine tables and seven seats at the Sushi bar, you are sure to receive personal attention from servers dressed in Japanese kimonos. Once seated, you will delight in a comprehensive menu of appetizers, rolls, sushi and sashimi.
Guest Chef Richard Wi has perfected his skills over the past 40 years; recently as the head chef at Matsuri Sushi in Moreno Valley. He brings to Amagi an inspired menu that is sure to delight! The standard Poke Bowl is served with three kinds of fish, avocado, cucumber, red onion and spicy soy mustard sauce, it is easy to see that they do not cut corners on their quality of fish.
The Roppongi Street Roll, a Chef Wi signature dish, is sufficient for light lunch or as a shared appetizer before your meal. A lightly deep fried white fish is combined with cabbage and roasted almond and wrapped in soy paper. The creamy basil sauce ties all the flavors together. As with all items on the menu, the Roppongi Street Roll is an artistic delight.
The Tuna Tataki, a California-Japanese fusion dish is lightly seared to make it the perfect dish to introduce the pleasures of fresh ahi to people who swear they won’t eat raw fish. Even new converts to sushi will appreciate the quality of fish prepared with the Japanese sauce and dried onion. It was the perfect introduction to the next item up, the Sashimi Combo.
The sashimi combo is as delicious as it is beautiful to behold. Once you taste the variety of fish it will become very apparent; this is not two-day-old fish. The White Fish, Yellow Tail, and Salmon, all tasted like it was caught this morning. Even those who are not raw fish eaters will find this to be a delicious surprise.
The last dish presented by Chef Wi, the Scallop with Shrimp, is the perfect dish for a cold night. The perfectly prepared scallops will melt in your mouth and the Japanese fusion creamy butter sauce is simply delicious. The addition of asparagus lightens the dish and helps you believe that the butter sauce didn’t go overboard on the calories.
There’s something on the menu for everybody, both cooked and uncooked. If you enjoyed Matsuri Sushi in Moreno Valley you will find the same attention to detail in the food presentation and the outstanding quality of the fish. The new management has brought decades of chef experience to make you think you are dining in an upscale metropolitan restaurant. If you don’t know what to order, simply ask for the chef special, “Omakase” and he will prepare a complete meal with appetizers, 2 cold items, 2 hot items and dessert. The price varies from $50 to $100 depending on your fish selections and quantity of food. Of course the all-you-can eat sushi is available too.
The new ownership team, Unique Box Enterprises, brings to the restaurant a missionary’s heart with the goal to spread good will and good deeds in the community. Within the next year they plan to open a second location in Palm Desert and a third in downtown Riverside. Their long term goal is to open ten restuarants and to use the profits to do good in the world. They invite you to join them on the journey and the enjoy a delicious meal along the way.
